Maj. Gen. Fawzi al-Mansouri, head of military intelligence for eastern Libya's Libyan National Army, was killed in a bombing outside his home in Benghazi.
Security sources said an improvised explosive device detonated in or near al-Mansouri's vehicle outside his Benghazi home Monday evening. No suspect was immediately identified.
Al-Mansouri led the military intelligence department of the Libyan National Army, the force commmanded by Khalifa Haftar. He was appointed intel chief in 2024.
Benghazi is the main stronghold of Haftar-aligned forces. Killing a senior intel official exposes a significant vulnerability inside territory considered firmly under LNA control.
Libya remains split between eastern and western powers. A 2020 ceasefire ended major combat, but militias and competing governments remain part of the political landscape.
No group has claimed responsibility, and authorities had not announced a motive or suspect. The unanswered question is whether this was an isolated assassination or a sign of wider instability in eastern Libya.
