FDA Commissioner Marty Makary resigns

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary has resigned after just over a year leading the agency, following months of internal turmoil and political pressure. His departure comes amid tensions over drug approvals, vaccine policy, abortion-pill regulation and the handling of flavored e-cigarettes. President Donald Trump confirmed Makary’s exit Tuesday, while multiple reports said the White House had already approved plans to replace him. Makary, a Johns Hopkins surgeon, was confirmed in March 2025 and became a prominent figure in the administration’s health-policy overhaul. Deputy Commissioner Kyle Diamantas is expected to serve as acting commissioner while a permanent replacement is considered.
