Syria targets ‘Hezbollah’ terror cell in security operation

On Tuesday, Syria’s Ministry of Interior (MoI), working in coordination with the country’s General Intelligence Service, announced that security forces had uncovered a major Hezbollah-affiliated terror cell and thwarted an alleged plot aimed at destabilizing Syria.

In a statement, the Syrian Ministry of Interior (MoI) revealed the operation was pre-emptive in anticipation of an imminent series of planned assassinations targeting high ranking government officials. Security forces seized RPG rockets, automatic guns, explosive materials, and instruction manuals. The ministry further claimed the cell received ‘intensive specialized training’ in Lebanon before crossing over into Syria.

Hezbollah were quick to deny involvement, accusing Damascus of trying to incite tensions between the two parties, stressing they have no operations nor presence in Syria, finishing the statement by wishing safety and security for Syrians. Hezbollah has maintained having no presence in Syria since their post-2024 withdrawal.

This follows the foiling of a range of ISIS and Assadist cells over the last few months, including a Hezbollah sleeper cell on April 11 targeting a Syrian Rabbi, and another on April 19 which intended to provoke Israel by launching rockets from the southern Syrian region of Quneitra.
