An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 struck the southern Philippines on June 7, 2026, causing building collapses, infrastructure damage and casualties across parts of Mindanao, authorities said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at 23:38 UTC near the city of General Santos on the southern island of Mindanao at a depth of 63 kilometers (39 miles). The agency issued a tsunami threat forecast for parts of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and the Yap Islands.
The earthquake struck on the first day of the school year in the Philippines. Authorities reported widespread damage in General Santos, including collapsed buildings and incidents of soil liquefaction. Videos circulating on social media showed the collapse of several structures, including schools and automobile dealerships.
General Santos International Airport also sustained damage, while power outages were reported in several affected areas.
Tsunami waves were recorded at multiple locations following the earthquake. According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the highest wave measured 0.75 meters (2.5 feet) in Talengan, North Sulawesi.
OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo said that there are 37 recorded fatalities with more than 100 injuries.
