U.S. Strikes Target Iran’s Kharg Island

On March 13, U.S. forces carried out precision strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island, destroying over 90 targets designated as military infrastructure belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the operation via Truth Social moments after the military infrastructure on the island was hit. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes destroyed naval mine storage facilities, missile bunkers, various air defense systems, and other strategic points of interest. While the oil infrastructure of Kharg Island remains intact, the IRGC’s foothold on the island has been significantly degraded.

Accounting for more than 90% of Iran’s total oil exports, Iran’s Kharg Island is the nation’s primary hub for exporting oil to global markets. Although it serves as the country’s main economic lifeline, the territory has been heavily militarized by the IRGC over the years in an effort to deter any aggression towards the island.

The militarization of the island is not only limited to defensive capabilities but also extends to offensive assets, including naval mine storage facilities. If deployed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, these munitions would pose a serious threat to maritime traffic—a threat which would hamper global energy markets further.

Amidst ongoing hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, the nation’s energy infrastructure and oil facilities on the mainland have been subjected to kinetic strikes carried out by joint U.S.-Israeli forces. In contrast, Iran’s Kharg Island was spared from this campaign, leaving the country’s primary export hub unscathed throughout the conflict—up until this point.

Citing sources, Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that Kharg Island’s oil infrastructure suffered no damage from the U.S. strikes, aligning with both President Donald Trump’s statement on Truth Social and CENTCOM’s report confirming that the facilities were spared. Concurrently, Iran’s official state news agency, IRNA, corroborated that oil export operations from the island continue uninterrupted despite U.S. strikes on military installations.
