Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke has reached an agreement to purchase the Los Angeles Angels through Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, ending Arte Moreno’s 23-year tenure as owner of the Major League Baseball franchise. The transaction values the Angels at approximately $4 billion, according to people familiar with the agreement, which would make it the most expensive sale of an MLB franchise. The valuation surpasses the previous league record of approximately $3.9 billion established by the San Diego Padres earlier this year. The transaction includes not only the team but the real-estate opportunities Kroenke has with the surrounding and mostly undeveloped land the Anaheim stadium sits on, which is currently a large parking lot.
The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of 2027 and remains subject to approval by Major League Baseball. Additional financial terms surrounding the acquisition were not immediately disclosed. Kroenke described the Angels as a storied franchise positioned in a major sports market and said his ownership group was looking forward to the organization’s future. Moreno, meanwhile, said his family believed Kroenke Sports and Entertainment’s experience operating professional franchises made it the right successor after more than two decades overseeing the Angels.
The acquisition would add the Angels to one of the largest sports ownership portfolios in the world. Kroenke Sports and Entertainment already controls the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, while Kroenke also owns Premier League club Arsenal. With the Angels acquisition, the group would hold franchises across each of the four major North American professional sports leagues. The Rams, Nuggets, Avalanche and Arsenal have all captured major championships or league titles during the past decade, giving Angels fans a potentially significant change in ownership strategy and resources.
Moreno purchased the Angels in 2003, shortly after the franchise won the 2002 World Series. Despite featuring several of baseball’s most prominent players during his ownership, the organization has struggled to produce sustained postseason success and has not reached the playoffs since 2014. Calls from portions of the fanbase for Moreno to sell the franchise intensified in recent years as the team continued missing the postseason. Completion of the Kroenke deal would formally close that era and place one of Southern California’s largest professional sports franchises under new ownership for the first time in more than two decades.
