THE MIDDLE EAST, Apr. 3 – A U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over southern Iran late Thursday night. A Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) operation is underway, with the pilot being rescued, and the weapons systems officer currently missing in action. Around the same time, an A-10 Thunderbolt went down near the Strait of Hormuz after receiving enemy fire, with the pilot successfully rescued.

The F-15E was downed while performing combat operations over southern Iran, with U.S. officials assessing that the aircraft was brought down by hostile fire. Both crew members ejected prior to impact; the pilot was rescued by U.S. CSAR teams, while the Weapons Systems Officer remains missing, as CSAR operations continue. The incident represents the first time a manned U.S. or Israeli aircraft was shot down by hostile fire since the beginning of the conflict on February 28, and highlights the risk of operating in a contested environment, even with air superiority.

Footage reviewed by Faytuks analysts shows U.S. CSAR assets, including HC-130 aircraft and HH-60 helicopters, operating over southern Iran. In one clip, Iranian police forces can be seen firing small arms at a pair of HH-60 helicopters, highlighting the hostile environment facing the teams.

Additional reporting indicates that two U.S. helicopters, a UH-60 and HH-60, were struck by Iranian fire during the operation but remained airborne, with their crew reporting injuries but accounted for. Meanwhile, elements of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), along with civilian participation, have been actively searching the crash area. Iranian-linked sources have also made calls for civilians to locate the missing airman, including offering kill/capture bounties, though these claims remain unverified.

Seperately, it is not confirmed if the A-10 that went down in the Strait after taking hostile fire was directly related to the F-15 incident. The pilot of that aircraft was safely rescued by U.S. forces.

The situation remains tense as U.S. forces continue recovery operations under heavy fire, with the status of the missing crew member likely to serve as a turning point in any further escalation between Washington and Tehran.

Artemis II Launches, Sending Astronauts Back Toward the Moon for the First Time Since 1972

CAPE CANAVERAL, Apr. 1 – NASA on Wednesday launched Artemis II, a mission decades in the making and the agency’s first attempt since the Apollo era to send astronauts beyond low Earth orbit toward the moon. The Space Launch System Block 1 rocket lifted off from Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 6:35 p.m. EDT, carrying the Orion spacecraft and a four-member crew into space. NASA said the launch marked the start of an approximately 10-day test flight around the moon and back.

The crew aboard Orion consists of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The mission carries several historic firsts: Koch is the first woman assigned to a lunar mission, Glover is the first Black astronaut on such a flight, and Hansen is the first Canadian and first non-American headed into cislunar space on a moon mission. Sanitation, Communications Issues Occur During Early Flight

According to the Associated Press, mission teams were troubleshooting a minor toilet malfunction in the early phase of the flight, alongside a briefly interrupted communications link. That issue, while not mission-jeopardizing, drew attention because Orion’s sanitation system had already been the subject of unusual interest before launch. NASA’s Artemis II reference materials highlighted the spacecraft’s updated toilet and hygiene setup, a notable improvement over the far cruder waste-management arrangements used during Apollo. Where exactly are Iranian Su-35s?

Amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington, and months after reports first emerged of a multi-billion dollar deal between Iran and Russia for advanced Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets, the anticipated warplanes have yet to appear on Iranian airbases, fueling uncertainty over the deal’s status and its implications.

Leaked Russian defense documents suggested Tehran had agreed to purchase up to 48 Su-35s in a contract worth roughly €7 billion, a move seen as part of a broader military partnership with Moscow. Despite these reports, and acknowledgments from Iranian commanders that Su-35s had been purchased, independent imagery and military observers have not verified the delivery of assembled Su-35 jets operating in Iran.

Were the Su-35s Diverted?

Some speculation suggests aircraft originally meant for Iran have been diverted elsewhere. However, this appears to be unsupported by the known documents. According to leaked documents obtained through United24, the delivery window for the initial 18 aircraft is after the end of 2025 and within 2028, meaning that contract-wise the delivery window has only just started. That said, despite being a strategic partner to Iran, Russia does not appear to have expedited delivery of the jets in the face of looming war, especially as deliveries for Algeria appear to be taking priority over Iran. Others note that pilots and technicians have trained on the type in Russia without any confirmed operational deployment in Iran. Preparations also appear to be underway at Iranian airbases to deploy and house the new jets.

Washington has significantly increased its military presence in the Middle East, deploying dozens of advanced fighter jets and aircraft carriers within reach of Iranian airspace, a show of force linked to long-running disputes over Tehran’s nuclear program and regional activities. Satellite imagery this week revealed a major surge in U.S. air power in neighboring Jordan and Saudi Arabia, increasing the stakes of the standoff.

In response to the buildup, Russia has publicly urged restraint while conducting joint naval exercises with Iran in the Gulf of Oman, underscoring Moscow’s strategic disposition: supportive of Tehran, yet cautious about direct confrontation with the United States. The broader U.S.–Iran confrontation has also included temporary closures of Iranian airspace and heightened alert status, reflecting fears in Tehran of possible American military action amid stalled nuclear negotiations.

For Iran, acquiring Su-35s would represent a significant upgrade to its aging air force, which has struggled to replace older aircraft and was seen as powerless during last year’s war with Israel. But for now, the aircraft remain conspicuously absent, and their potential deployment remains unclear as the situation has become one of the most volatile geopolitical flashpoints.
