A new batch of Epstein files released by the U.S. Justice Department in January revealed the former prime minister’s links to Jeffrey Epstein. Emails suggest the two vacationed together on multiple occasions while the former PM was still active in high-level politics.
In February, Norway’s economic crime unit, Økokrim, launched a probe into Thorbjørn Jagland’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein following the release of new U.S. Justice Department files. As part of the investigation, authorities searched Jagland’s Oslo residence and two other properties, according to CNN. Jagland has denied any wrongdoing, stating he is ready to cooperate, providing necessary information to authorities to prove his innocence.
Born in 1950, Thorbjørn Jagland has been a prominent figure in Norwegian politics, serving as Prime Minister of Norway from 1996 to 1997 and Minister of Foreign Affairs under Jens Stoltenberg’s Labour cabinet in 2000. Jagland, having served in these key positions, was later appointed Secretary General of the Council of Europe (2009–2019), where emails suggest his link to Epstein first emerged.
Økokrim’s investigation into the former Prime Minister’s ties to the Epstein network was authorized by the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers at the request of Norwegian authorities. As part of the authorization, the former Secretary General’s diplomatic immunity was formally waived.
