Explosion Strikes Zacatecas Police Station in Mexico

An explosion struck the municipal police headquarters in Ojocaliente, Zacatecas, on Sunday night after an apparent explosive device was thrown from a moving vehicle, leaving six civilians injured and prompting a large security response.

Zacatecas Secretary General Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza confirmed the incident, saying preliminary information provided by the state Public Security Secretariat indicated that a vehicle passed near the police facility before an object believed to be an explosive device was thrown toward the area. Video recorded near the scene captured a powerful explosion followed by a large flash and plume of smoke around the police facility. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the type of device used in the attack.

Six civilians were injured in the explosion and received medical treatment, according to state officials. Their identities and the severity of their injuries were not immediately disclosed. Security forces reinforced their presence across Ojocaliente following the attack and launched an operation to locate those responsible. No arrests had been publicly announced immediately following the explosion. Authorities said investigators would conduct forensic examinations to determine the exact nature of the device and establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Ojocaliente is located southeast of Zacatecas City and has previously experienced violence involving organized criminal groups and attacks targeting security forces.

The municipality’s police headquarters was also targeted in May 2025, when armed individuals reportedly threw improvised explosive devices toward the facility, damaging the building and a police vehicle without causing reported injuries. Sunday’s attack comes amid continuing security operations across Zacatecas targeting organized criminal groups and the use of improvised explosive devices against police and other security personnel.

State authorities said additional information would be released as the investigation progresses.

A purported statement attributed to the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG), threatened residents and local officials across southern Zacatecas, warning against supporting rivals, and took responsibility for Sunday’s explosive attack on Ojocaliente’s municipal police headquarters.
