Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke dies at 29

Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at 29, his agents announced Tuesday. A cause of death has not been released. Clarke, selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, spent his entire NBA career with Memphis after starring at Gonzaga. He appeared in 309 career games, averaging 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds, and earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020. His recent seasons were disrupted by knee and calf injuries, limiting him to two games this year. The Grizzlies and NBA community are expected to release further statements as more details become available.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on the passing of Grizzlies’ Brandon Clarke:

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke. As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous pride and grit. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends, and the Grizzlies organization.”

Clarke’s death came weeks after he was arrested in Cross County, Arkansas, following an alleged high-speed chase. An arrest affidavit said a deputy saw Clarke’s white Corvette pass at more than 100 mph before deputies pursued him. Authorities said he did not stop until a second deputy joined the chase. He was later charged with fleeing, speeding, improper passing, trafficking a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.
