Suspicious Package Sent From Germany Hospitalizes Three at Polish Military Facility

A suspicious envelope mailed from Germany to a military police station in Nowa Dęba, Poland, caused three base personnel to be hospitalized and prompted the evacuation of 133 people living in close proximity to the base.

Two military police officers, including the station’s deputy head, who opened the envelope, and a base employee were immediately rushed to the hospital after coming into contact with the package. All three reported severe skin irritation on their hands and sore throats, while the deputy head also developed shortness of breath.

The incident occurred at 10:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday when an envelope originating from an unknown location in Germany was received by base personnel at Nowa Dęba’s military police station, located approximately 70 miles from the southeastern border with Ukraine. The envelope contained nothing but a short letter with a signature reading, “Greetings from the Golden One.”

Following the hospitalization of the three personnel, the base was placed on high alert. Hazmat teams brought to the scene concluded there were no further threats to the facility or the civilian population, ruling out the presence of chemical, biological, and radiological agents, or any hazardous residue.

An eyewitness speaking to a local newspaper stated that the hospital where the base personnel were admitted, along with its surroundings, had been cordoned off by law enforcement and military personnel. The same source also told reporters that the entrance to the emergency room had been blocked off, with no one permitted to enter or leave the facility.

Upon closer examination, Polish authorities determined that the base personnel who came into contact with the package showed no signs of poisoning or any condition that would warrant ongoing concern. While initial findings ruled out a biochemical attack, prosecutors assigned to the case confirmed the envelope and letter will undergo further forensic testing for fingerprints and DNA.

Later that day, Lt. Col. Dariusz Rozkosz, spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the Military Police, confirmed the personnel were discharged from the hospital. He added that the military police department in Rzeszów has been put in charge of the investigation, which remains ongoing. Rozkosz, however, did not confirm whether the package originated from Germany and had no further comment about its origins.
