Five Dead after Amazon Air Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami International Airport

An Amazon Prime Air cargo aircraft appears to have overrun a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, sustaining significant damage and prompting a full ground stop as emergency crews responded. Images and video from the scene showed the aircraft resting beyond the runway with its right wing missing following the incident. A fire broke out around the aircraft after it came to a stop, producing a large plume of smoke visible from elsewhere at the airport before firefighters extinguished the blaze.

WTVJ reported, citing a source familiar with the response, that the aircraft’s two pilots were taken to Jackson South Medical Center while three other people were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Authorities have not publicly identified the five people killed or those hospitalized, and it was not immediately clear whether all of the fatalities were aboard the aircraft or on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to Faytuks Network 21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport at around 2 p.m. local time Sunday. The agency identified the aircraft as a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane that had departed Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “The FAA will investigate,” the agency said, noting that the information remains preliminary and subject to change.

The circumstances surrounding the apparent runway overrun were not immediately clear. Officials had not publicly identified a preliminary cause.
